Taro Allergy

So one day, on a fine lunch at home, I had some sinigang. I requested for winged beans and some taro to be added and cooked to it  so I can amp up my vegetable intake. I was the only one who hasn’t eaten yet, having napped through lunch, so the  longer wait was fine.

I happily munched on my winged beans, eating about  a cup of the greens, Then on to my taro. A few small pieces into my mouth and a difficult swallow. And then I felt like I was dying.

I was having trouble breathing, and an attempt to swallow a spoonful of rice to soothe my throat brought me to tears. I spat out the rice and asked for help from my mom, who promptly gave me a spoonful of sugar, expecting things to be fine. Nope. It wasn’t fine. 10 minutes in and I still feel like I swallowed 50 needles which got stuck in my mouth and throat.

Into the ER, they said it was an allergic reaction, gave me a prescription for some anti-inflammatory and to gargle. And that was it. Well, plus a soft food diet for the next 4 days.

The worst thing is I do love taro, and I don’t know if it is a by-chance happening, undercooked taro, or me, but I will still try it again for sure.
