Quick Eats: Eataly, Chicago

Our party of 7, well, missing one
Our party of 7, well, missing one

My cousin brought me here because she knew that I would enjoy it. The sad thing I decided to just get one soft cheese and a some sliced prosciutto because I can’t travel for far too long with any soft cheese. Why buy hard cheeses when I don’t like them as much and I still have some at home? 🙂 So I ended up buying those and gorging on those meats while I was still in Chicago, and it was so worth it. Seriously worth it.

Eataly is a mix of food and non-food products available for sale, all of Italian origin. Then there are food places in the two floors, like the gelateria, nutellla place, pizza and pasta place, seafood, and cheese and cold cuts. So it was all separate, and you can end up trying a few different places (which we planned to do but failed at) in one meal. It makes it harder for some to enjoy. I would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t eat so much on the first round. 😦

We first went to the pizza and pasta place simply because we were with kids and my aunt and it would have been quite uncomfy and unenjoyable to eat in the tiny bar stools  that were meant to have small appetizers or meals in. We ordered two kinds of pizzas. one with spicy Italian sausages, the other with cheese, onions and olives. I was a bit surprised that the pizza bottoms were wet. Maybe moisture? But it was a bit disappointing since I do want my pizza, not even necessarily crunchy, but surely not wet. it also discouraged me to eat the pizza with my hands, which I like doing (except for deep dish). So it was off with a knife and fork. Beside the moistness of the pizza crust, it was actually good. The flavors were simple and not too crazy (like a deep dish). but it was really good.

Some of the pasta

We ordered three plates of pasta next. One with meat and eggplants and zucchini, another is some kind of spinach and cheese filled pasta, and a seafood one. My favorite was what we ordered, which was the meat and eggplant one. It was simple and easy and the flavors were quite friendly. The pasta, oddly, was bordering underdone. I do like my past al dente. But this was raw on some parts. I overlooked that and moved on to the next pasta dish. The seafood with giant rigatoni was a bit fishy. Maybe it had anchovies or something. But Kevin didn’t even eat it. I was okay with it. I can make a better seafood dish. And yes, I am saying that. The last one was good. It was cheesy, but Matt didn’t like the cheese there. Found it to0 overpowering. But I know that any filled fresh pasta is always bordering on the expensive and underwhelming. This was good though. but not memorable.

Next we moved on to the ice cream and nutella store. My cousin ordered a nutella and banana crepe, which was really big and generous and worth the $6 price tag! The rest had ice cream, Matt had coffee. The ice cream was thick and delicious, how I imagine gelato or ice cream to be always be. I ordered vanilla with Italian cookies, my aunt had coffee, the kids both had hazelnut, and my cousin Kuya Mike had pistachio. All of the ice cream was good. And I would have tried the rest if I could. But I was stuffed at the point in time. 🙂

So after going around the store, I bought, on top of my cheese and prosciutto binge, canned stuff of truffle and everything. I hope these taste great as they promise. If not, well, we shall manage. 🙂
