Quick Eats: Planet Grapes, Festival Mall, Alabang

Wine and the dispenser at the back

Planet Grapes has been around for a while now. Its first branch was in McKinley Hill. From the name itself, it features wine as its main attraction, saying that they allow you to be able to sample a lot of the items without being forced to buy bottles and bottles at a time. They have wine on a dispenser system, and I really don’t know how they keep it fresh, but they do.

For a family lunch, we decided to try this, with my older sister’s recommendation of them having good food. So off we went.

I was surprised, but then it seemed right, that their menu had very limited mains. A lot of appetizers and small dishes, like tapas. Perfect for wine 🙂 Upon being handed the menu, I spied maybe a handful of affordable mains, plus expensive grilled food, about 6 to 7 only. We ordered some tapa with rice, grilled chicken with rice, then the big daddy plate. The big daddy plate I think was intended for Father’s Day, but it was me, my mom, and my sister who ended up sharing that one dish. There were also some appetizers of soups and quail eggs, mostly for the kids.

Our order had 3 complimentary glasses of wine. Two for the big daddy, and one for the chicken. I decided to go red since the big daddy had red only. I really prefer white though, and we couldn’t change it. Too bad. They served Pinot Noir.

Soon the food arrived one by one. First was the chips appetizer. It was homemade potato chips with truffle oil. The quail eggs came next. Then the tapa with rice. the beef was tender, and I liked it that it wasn’t really sweet like a lot of the local beef tapas. This was more on the sour side, which was really good. Garlicky too.

I wasn’t able to try the chicken which arrived next. But the big daddy plate and soup soon followed.

The mushroom soup serving was terribly small. I am used to big bowls of this actually. But this was really flavorful mushroom, and it was just right the right serving if you think of it as a course, rather than the main meal itself. It was chunky, flavorful, and just right. But if you are the type to like a bowlful, you will be severely disappointed.

Now the big daddy plate! This consists of 2 chorizo sliders, about 8 slices of thick barbecue ribs, and some young coconut pie. Plus the servings of red wine. This plate cost P1200 I think. But damn it was really good. We eat so little so this plate was maybe good for four people, when it’s only for two. But it was really good that I couldn’t help myself from eating more than I am used to!!! I loved everything on that plate 🙂

We also ordered the dessert sampler, which was a small square of lemon cheesecake, a little tub of leche flan, and some suman, with a coconut sauce. It was also nice. Just right as well. Though the suman had a bit of bitter taste for me, maybe from the lye it is usually made with, I was extremeley happy with everything, all of the food!

I wish we have started eating earlier here. But I guess the menu options are also far in between anyway. So maybe next time, I will try to enjoy the wine more, more than the food. But I know for sure that I will be having some good food anytime I drink here. 🙂
